Michigan
State University Press Internship Program
The Application Process
Cover
Letter
Please indicate the internship you are applying for and your preferred
semester or
semesters. Please indicate if you would like to be considered
for more than one
internship position or if you would be willing to work an alternative
semester if your
first choice is not available.
Copyediting Exercise*
Please complete the copyediting
exercise
using the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, the MSU Press
Freelance Copyeditor Guidelines, and Merriam-Websters Collegiate
Dictionary, 11th edition. You may do this either on paper in red
pencil, writing author queries in the margins; or electronically
using the track changes feature in Microsoft Word
and the insert comment feature for author queries.
Although electronic editing is preferred, please use it only if
you are comfortable with the editing features in MS Word.
----
Please submit the copyediting exercise on paper. If you choose
to edit it electronically, please print the exercise, showing
all corrections in the printout.
Please keep in mind that this is not a pass/fail test. If you
are uncomfortable editing in MS Word and choose to use red pencil
for the exercise, or if you do not understand everything in the
guidelines, do not worry about it. We do not expect you to understand
everything. We simply want to gauge your current skill level.
-*The
copyediting guidelines are geared toward the Chicago Manual of
Style, 14th edition. MSU Press is in the process of switching
to the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition. An updated set of
guidelines will be uploaded as soon as they are available. During
the transition, students may use either manual as their guide
on the copyediting exercise. Please indicate in your cover letter
which manual was used.
Writing Sample
Please write an essay of approximately 500 words on why academic
publishing interests you and what you hope to gain from this internship.
