Q:
Do you offer credit for internships?
If so, how do I go about getting it?
A: Yes. Many colleges and departments
have a course number for field experience, internship, or independent
study. First, talk to your adviser about which program would best
satisfy your graduation requirements. Then, go to that department
or college and find out the program requirements for both the student
and the employer. Bring all information with you to your interview.
Q: I don't need the credit to graduate.
May I still intern at the Press?
A: Yes. Non-credit internships are treated exactly the same
as credit internships. You will be held to the same requirements
of attendance, work quality, and professionalism as those students
working for credit
.
Q: Are internships paid?
A: No. There are several paid student employee positions. Most
of the student employees began as interns at the MichganState University
Press. If you are interested in continuing your experience at the
Press, ask your supervisor if there will be any upcoming student
employee positions. Preference for these positions is given to former
interns.
Q: Is there a dress code?
A: The Press recognizes that students are juggling shifts at
the Press with classes and other jobs. Consequently, the dress code
for students is casual. You should remember, however, that Michigan
State University Press is a place of business. You are expected
to appear neat and clean, modestly attired, and wearing nothing
that could be considered offensive by either staff or customers.
Q: What is the attendance
policy?
A: Internships are designed to provide pre-professional experience.
You should therefore consider it to be a job, not a class. You are
expected to report for your shift on time, physically and mentally
prepared to work. We recognize that occasionally you may be ill
or may need to be absent for other reasons. If you are ill, you
are expected to notify your supervisor if you cannot come to work.
Non-illness related absences should be approved by your supervisor
at least one week in advance. If you are doing the internship for
credit, you will be required to make up all missed time either by
working extra hours at the Press during regular business hours or
by taking work home with you. No show/no calls are unacceptable.
Excessive tardiness or absence may result in early termination of
the internship.
Q: Where is Michigan State University Press
located? How do I get there?
A: The MSU Press occupies four suites of offices in the Manly
Miles Building, at the corner of South Harrison Road and Crescent
Drive; across from the Amtrak station and next door to the main
branch of the MSU Federal Credit Union. The main reception area
for the Press is suite 25 in the lower level. There is a CATA bus
stop in front of the Manly Miles Building. To link to MSU campus

Q: Is parking available?
A: The Manly Miles building has an employee parking lot. You
must have a special parking pass to park in the lot. Because of
our distance from the rest of campus, the MSU Department
of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) sometimes
issues temporary parking passes to students interning at the Press.
If you need to drive, inform your supervisor. We will write a letter
to DPPS on your behalf. You must take this to DPPS, along with an
application for a temporary parking pass. They will review your
application and, if it is approved, issue a pass good for the semester
of your internship.
Q: What are the Press hours? How
do I schedule my internship?
A: The MSU Press is open Monday through Friday, from 8AM to
5PM. Your internship hours must be scheduled during this time. Editorial
and production internships should be scheduled for 4 or more hours
in a shift. Marketing and acquisitions require at least 2 hour blocks.
Once you have determined a schedule that is compatible with your
class schedule and the number of credits you are taking, verify
with your supervisor that work station space is available
Q: How are internships evaluated?
If I do not perform well, can my internship be terminated early?
A: Internships are meant to be a growth experience both educationally
and professionally. You will meet with your supervisor weekly to
touch base on current projects, problems, questions, and concerns.
If you are working for credit, your evaluation is simply "pass
/ no pass" and is based on professionalism, enthusiasm, and
growth in skills. If you show up on time and are prepared to work,
give your best effort, and your skills show improvement, you will
pass. If attendance, work ethic, professionalism, or attitude is
poor, or if you are not responsive to feedback and fail to show
an improvement in work quality or skills; you may not pass and your
internship could be terminated early. Students are expected to make
mistakes, learn from them, and grow. Consequently, early termination
of internships is extremely rare and only occurs after the student
fails to respond to feedback.
