Unsettled Pasts presents a collection of essays designed to generate writing and research about the West from a woman's point of view as well as creating dialogue across boundaries, both geographic and cultural. Divided into two parts, the first group of essays discuss topics regarding the role of women in history as community builders and cultural preservationists. The second section is concerned with gender history from numerous academic disciplines including history, education, nursing and communication studies.

The editors of this collection are academics, activists, and professional organizers. They share a common interest in the role of women, both in a historical and contemporary context.
