Mel Visser & Sierra Club Discussion 2008

May 14, 2008, Marquette, Michigan.:

Mel Visser, the environmentalist author of Cold, Clear and Deadly: Unraveling a Toxic Legacy will speak to the Sierra Club on "Cold, Clear and Deadly: Lake Superior?" at Marquette's Peter White Public Library, MAy 14 at 7 pm. Does Lake Superior, considered by most to be the cleanest Great Lake, actually harbor surprisingly high levels of some toxic contaminants? Why will spending billions on cleaning up contaminated Great Lakes sediments alone not solve the problem of PCB and toxaphene pollution? Forget all you know about this issue from conventional wisdom and sources. Keweenaw Bay commercial fishermen, uncles of his wife-to-be, introduced MTU chemical engineering student Mel Visser to Lake Superior in the 1950s. During Mel’s career in chemical manufacturing at the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, he returned to the lake regularly and sadly witnessed the devastation of its fishery by chemicals and invasive species. In 1980, Mel assumed the leadership of Upjohn’s environmental compliance and had the privilege of working with and learning from Great Lakes environmental leadership through the Great Lakes Regional Corporate Environmental Council, an organization of U.S. and Canadian industrial and environmental leaders. Peter White Public Library, 217 North Front Street, Marquette, MI 49855. 906.228.9510;FAX: 906.226.1783.
