Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When are your reading periods?
A: Our annual reading period is August 15th to November 30th. We also accept submissions for our Annual Michael Steinberg Essay Prize between January 5th and February 28th.
Q: Do you accept submissions outside the reading periods?
A: No. We will not consider submissions received outside of our reading periods. If you wish to have your manuscript returned to you, please provide a 9” x 12” SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope)
Q: Do you accept multiple submissions?
A: Multiple submissions not accepted from individual authors for our annual reading period. The Michael Steinberg Essay Prize does accept multiple submissions.
Q: What about simultaneous submissions?
A: We do accept simultaneous submissions. Please notify the Fourth Genre staff immediately if the work under consideration has been accepted elsewhere.
Q: What is the length requirement?
A: Essay submissions should not exceed 8,000 words. Submissions to the Michael Steinberg Essay Prize should not exceed 6,000 words. Longer submissions will not be read.
Q: May I submit online or via email?
A: No, we only accept hard copy submissions. All electronic submissions will be disregarded. You may send submissions to:

Q: What else should I send with my manuscript?
A:

Please send the following:

  1. Your manuscript, typed and double-spaced, on one side of 8.5” x 11” paper.
  2. A letter-sized SASE. This is necessary if you wish to receive a response about your submission. If you wish to have your manuscript sent back to you, also send a 9” x 12” SASE with correct postage.
  3. A cover letter with all of your correct contact information, including: your name, address, phone number, email, piece’s title, and approximate word count.
